Caffeine is a mild stimulant derived from tea or
coffee, as well as cola nuts, ilex plants, and
cocoa. It can be prepared synthetically from uric
acid. Caffeine is the most popular and widely used
mind-altering drug in the world. It increases heart
rate, blood pressure, and urination, and stimulates
secretion of stomach acids. Excessive intake can
result in restlessness, insomnia, and heart
irregularities. Physical dependence and unpleasant
symptoms upon withdrawal (headache, fatigue,
depression) are common for regular caffeine users.
